I dreamt of cool liquid touching my lips, then burning my esophagus on the way down. It was almost as though I was swallowing fire. Who could do that? Not even me, the strongest and most dashing man in Camehelot.

I was unsure how long I was comatose. All I remembered was cold enveloping me, and the next minute, molten heat ran down my throat. I still hadn’t opened my eyes for fear I’d be with the Angels.

“How long does it take to work?” the king asked.

“It should’ve worked the moment he digested it. I’m at a loss as to why he hasn’t regained consciousness,” Gerald said.

“But he will be all right… won’t he?” Clara asked. Her voice was like a magnet pulling me.

I moved my hands and found soft, delicate fingers intertwined with mine.

“Clara?” I choked out, opening my eyes.

She surrounded me with a tight hug, and I wished that she would never let go.

But it wasn’t to be.

She withdrew, and her worry peeked back at me. I never wanted to be responsible for that look again. It tugged at my heart, and I needed to soothe away all her troubles. I reached up and grazed her cheek. She nuzzled into my hand. I craved, with the entirety of my being, to make her happy for the rest of my life.

I love her.

The realization slammed into me. I didn’t know when my affections had grown so strong. Or maybe I’d always loved her and lacked the courage to admit it. My feelings should’ve scared me, but it was the opposite. I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs that I loved her and I never aspired to be without her.

But not yet. Not until I knew her desires—I wouldn’t force her into something she didn’t want. She had to accept me. Accept not only me but also becoming the future queen.

“Thank the Angels for that, but seeing how he’s awake, can we figure out the next step? I recommend it sooner rather than later since we are now down a man,” Henry said with urgency. He was standing on the other side of me.

Down a man? Had someone died?

I squirmed and sat up in bed. “What happened?” I groaned at my stiff muscles. I ached in places I didn’t know it was possible.

“You were unconscious, and we were unable to wake you, but Gerald brought you back with a potion. You owe him.” Henry adjusted his position, looking uncomfortable.

“But?” I asked.

“Do you want the good or the bad news?” Henry tried to stall.

“Just tell me,” I barked. Annoyance filled me. I’d always hated this game.

“The good news is that our magical council came up with a concept for a potion. The bad news is that it didn’t work.” Henry paused, clearly not wanting to continue. He took a large breath and said, “Desmond volunteered, and it would’ve killed him if Gerald hadn’t put him in a magically induced sleep.”

No.

My heart seemed to drop into the pit of my belly.
